At the end of June 2016, a group of almost 50 Notre Dame and St. Mary’s alums and friends attending a fundraising event to benefit the GALA ND/SMC LGBT Student Scholarship. Hosted by Cody Lassen ’09 MBA at his fabulous Malibu home, everyone enjoyed the beautiful pool-side setting surrounded by vineyards.
The morning started off with a special VIP Reception with guest speaker Bryan Ricketts ’18. As the first openly gay student body president, Bryan talked about the current environment on campus, the progress that has been made, and also the continued challenges for the University to more fully embrace the LGBT community.
As the main program kicked off, alums heard from Sam Chou ’18, the 2016/2017 LGBT Scholarship recipient. Sam, who had just returned from a semester in Rome, shared how the scholarship is significantly helping him balance the costs of attending Notre Dame while still pursuing his passions of driving for improved LGBT visibility and recognition on campus.
The program completed with Lindsey Horvath ’04, former Mayor and current Councilmember for the city of West Hollywood. Lindsey shared with the group of her many experiences helping disenfranchised groups including women, seniors and members of the LGBT community and of the importance for alumni to support the current group of LGBT students attending Notre Dame and St. Mary’s.
