$250,000 Five-Year Goal Achieved in 2020!
Thanks to everyone who participated in our scholarship benefit events and donated to this important cause.
In the spring of 2015, The Gay and Lesbian Alumni/ae of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College (GALA-ND/SMC) created The GALA ND/SMC LGBTQ Student Scholarship Fund to assist qualified LGBTQ undergraduate students of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College. Through September – 2020, twelve scholarships have been awarded. The long term goal is to increase that to a minimum of four scholarships each year. The students this scholarship supports are the new generation of Notre Dame and St Mary’s grads. Even with the changing times, LGBTQ students still face significant challenges that their straight peers may not. See four LGBTQ students tell their story of life on campus. LGBT Student Video
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance and support to full-time undergraduate students who identifies within the LGBTQ community. The hope is that this scholarship will assist the recipients with reducing the financial costs incurred (estimated full cost of attending Notre Dame during ‘19/’20 is $72,000) while pursuing their education as well as allow them to make a positive impact at Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, and/or the South Bend community.
GALA has embarked on a capital program to ensure continued funding of the scholarships in the future. The fundraising goal of the program is $250,000 through 2020. To meet this goal, GALA is holding a series of events in larger metropolitan areas such as New York City and Los Angeles. In addition, we will be performing outreach to alumni/ae to help continue supporting students attend our beloved alma mater.
