Sr. Mary Louise (M.L.) Gude (South Bend, IN, 2010)

Mary Louise Gude

Sister Mary Louise Gude has spent her life in Holy Cross educational institutions. She holds a licentiate from the University of Montreal and a Ph.D in French literature from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught one year at Holy Cross Academy, Kensington, MD and four years at Dunbarton College in Washington D.C. The rest of her career she has spent at Saint Mary's College and the University of Notre Dame. She chaired the Modern Language program in her years at Saint Mary's and held a number of positions at Notre Dame, assistant rector, rector, assistant to the chair in the Department of Romance Languages, and assistant vice-president for Student Affairs. In that last assignment she chaired the Standing Committee on Gay and Lesbian Student Needs, which eventually developed into the Core Council. She was instrumental, along with Standing Committee members in creating a program for all first-year students on issues facing the gay comminity at Notre Dame. She retired from Notre Dame in 2006 and is currently vice-president for mission at Saint Mary's College.
